The fifth National Eye Health Week will take place on 22-28 September 2014.
Over 50 per cent of sight loss can be avoided, and yet many of us don’t know the best way to look after our eyes. National Eye Health Week aims to change that by promoting the importance of eye health and the need for regular sight tests for all.
The RNIB is hoping that you’ll help them by raising awareness of eye health amongst your staff and service users during the week. In particular, they’re asking if you could:
· Include information on eye health on your staff intranet/ in your staff newsletter; and/or
· Put National Eye Health Week leaflets and posters around your organisation; and/or
· Include information on eye health in any newsletters/ magazines etc that go out to your service users.
They can provide you with the leaflets and posters and also with the information for your newsletters, and are happy to tailor the articles to suit your particular audience. If you already work towards the Corporate Health Standard or your own health and wellbeing strategy then these activities could fit in well with your existing programme of work.

Get Ready for the Stoptober Campaign this Autumn
The Stoptober campaign is being run once again this Autumn. If you have/know of any events happening in Powys during the 9th – 28th September that Powys Local Public Health Team can piggy back please let them know asap. They are also looking for smokers wishing to take part in the Stoptober campaign to become local heroes (profile below).
· Stoptober It will be launched on the 8th September in Cardiff. At this launch will be the CMO, leads from PHW and the local heroes who will be taking part in Stoptober
· From the 9th Sept - 28th Sept is the local awareness raising / recruitment phase which will see seven bigger roadshow type events taking place across each Health Board area. Merchandise and marketing collateral by way of posters and leaflets will be available for organisations / stakeholders.
· Heroes: They would like to ‘recruit’ several local heroes across Wales. One or two or more across each Local Health Board area for them to work with local press, local social media channels etc… to drive the message and help others who are attempting to quit.
These heroes should:
Ø Be a smoker
Ø Have a strong reason why they want to give up
Ø Be willing to take part in smoking cessation services (121s of face to face contact, meetings, phone calls)
Ø Be media friendly (i.e they are not too shy)
Ø Be willing to have the media contact them, upload video blogs to social media, be interviewed by the TV)
Ø Have a willing family who will support them through the quit attempt who would also be willing to talk to the media.
· They are also looking for families who have had their lives affected by smoking - be that through lung cancer, respiratory disease etc.. These families should also be media friendly if possible and willing to tell their stories to encourage others to give up smoking and access the Stop Smoking Wales support services.

The Statement of Intent – Integrated Health and Social Care Service in Powys
The statement of Intent – Integrated Health and Social Care Service in Powys is an important document produced by Powys County Council (PCC) and Powys teaching Health Board (PtHB) in collaboration with PAVO to provide seamless and integrated health and social care services for older people in Powys.
It forms one element of the One Powys Plan and sets out
· A baseline assessment in respect of health and social care service integration,
· Priorities and activities to strengthen service integration
· A framework for governance monitoring progress.
PAVO now attends the executive Health and Social Care Integrated Leadership Board (Carl Cooper) and the Integrated Care Pathways for Older People – ICPOP (Trish Buchan). Third Sector has already helped to shape decisions on the expenditure of Intermediate Care Fund through responses to the survey on integrated Care. As the work rolls out PAVO will be seeking more active involvement of our sector and will provide regular updates through the HSCN blogs. The handy person will fit this and depending on whether the person is in receipt of a means tested benefit (Pension credit guarantee, income support, council tax benefit, housing benefit etc) will depend on there being a charge of £15 per hour or part there of.

Review of the Standards for Health Services in Wales and the Fundamentals of Care Standards Events
“On the 9 July 2013 a plenary debate took place relating to learning from the Francis Inquiry. A Ministerial commitment was made in “Delivering Safe Care, Compassionate Care, Learning for Wales from the Report of the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust Public Inquiry”, to review and update the Standards for Health Services in Wales and the Fundamentals of Care Standards. The new set of fundamental standards will be centred on individuals and their needs. They will set out clearly the expectations of every member of staff and organisation in serving the needs of their patients or service users and their carers.
To guarantee the success of the revision of the standards they have to be owned by the service and therefore the Welsh Government is facilitating their development in close collaboration with stakeholders from health care, social care, voluntary sector, inspectorate, regulator and patient representative bodies. As a consequence three engagement events are planned this month to inform the drafting of the revised standards framework, which will be subject to formal consultation in the Autumn. Patients, service users and carers who would like to contribute to the development of the standards framework are welcome to contribute to these events”.

Brecon Dementia Friendly Community
Brecon Demential Friendly Community are bag packing in Morrisons on Saturday 6th September, 10 -5pm. They will be there rattling their buckets, handing out fliers with details re public Dementia Friends sessions and introducing the Making Brecon a Dementia Friendly Community hints and tips leaflets.
Monies will go towards starting up a Tea Cosy memory cafe in Brecon , which will be open to everyone within the community. If anyone has some time to spare, or knows of anyone who would like to get involved, please leave a message at info@dementiafriendlybrecon.org.uk .

Nest New Regulation Changes
Here are some Nest regulation changes to private landlord and owner occupied properties. Hopefully this is coming out in formal Nest communication shortly as the changes have already been implemented. As of 7th July 2014, the following apply:
· A private landlord can refer a maximum of 3 properties to the Nest scheme (previously this number was 10).
· Private tenants must have resided in the property for a minimum of 6 months prior to a Nest application.
· Private tenants must have a valid tenancy agreement with 6 months left to run as a minimum.
· Private tenants will need to show proof of residency/address to the whole house assessor (to demonstrate they have been in the property for 6 months prior to application, e.g utility bill or council tax bill) as well as a valid tenancy agreement.
· It is only residential properties Nest will accept, the property cannot have been used for a business 12 months prior to the application.
· A private landlord will need to produce their valid gas safety record and send to Nest once a property has been referred.
Please note these changes to regulations are made by the Welsh Government.
Clearly these new regulations could reduce those eligible to apply to Nest. Therefore, if they receive applications from private tenants who fall short of the 6 month minimum time in the property prior to application, they will outbound call them once they reach the 6 month criteria.
If there is anyway Nest can work together to overcome any barriers private rented tenants or others might encounter when applying to Nest please don’t hesitate to contact them.

PtHB Annual Quality Statement- Third Sector Feedback 2014
This report has been collated by PAVO and summarises feedback from Powys Third Sector Health and Social Care Network and Third Sector Service Provider Forum from an online survey. The survey requested feedback on the progress of PtHB in achieving priorities set out in its Annual Quality Statement 2013-14. The report also identifies areas that Powys third sector organisations feel should be addressed by IPIE (Improving Patient Involvement and Experience) during 2014-15. The theme of the conference is the development of a Powys Third Sector Scheme that will set out clear arrangements with key statutory partners for the funding of the third sector, its role as a partner and the part in can play in scrutiny and accountability.
We are particularly pleased that the Minister for Communities & Tackling Poverty, Jeff Cuthbert AM, will be guest speaker at the conference.
Invitations will follow in due course to all PAVO Member organisations and partners. We hope you will be able to be with us on the day and that you will cascade this information through your organisation and via your networks.
